8 Health benefits of Ram/Sheep meat


For introductory purposes, Rams are actually male sheep, while the adult female sheep are called Ewes.


Here in Nigeria, adult Ram meat (also known as mutton) is not consumed as often as goat meat, beef and other forms of red meat. It is consumed most commonly during the muslim holiday Eid el Kabir, also known as Eid al Adha or “Feast of Sacrifice“.

Here are some of the health benefits of Ram meat (mutton).

  1. Great source of iron

Iron deficiency is one of the causes of anaemia. As ram meat (Mutton) is a red meat, which is a richer source of iron than white meat (poultry and fish), it helps in the prevention of iron deficiency anaemia.

  1. High quality protein source

Ram meat (Mutton) is one of the high quality protein sources in nature. Protein is a key ingredient in muscle building, body maintenance and body repair.

  1. Source of vitamin B12

Ram meat can also be a source of B vitamins which are water soluble, thus not stored in the body. It is important to eat foods rich in them daily.

Vitamin B12 which aids the production of blood in the body, it keeps nerves working properly and also helps brain function.

Vitamin B12 also prevents the occurrence of neutral tube defects when consumed by pregnant women.

  1. Source of other B vitamins

Ram meat is also a source of Vitamin B2 and B3 (also water soluble vitamins) which help the body cells use fat, protein and carbohydrates from foods to produce energy

  1. Source of Calcium

Calcium is important in the maintenance of teeth and bones.

  1. Boosts immunity

Ram meat contains zinc, which plays an important role in the body. The functions of Zinc include wound healing and immune boosting.

  1. Contains antioxidants

Ram meat contains selenium, which collaborates with vitamin E to work as antioxidants for the body.

Selenium also has anti-aging properties.

  1. Source of Healthy Fatty acids

Contains unsaturated fats that help improve blood cholesterol levels. Ram meat also contains low levels of saturated fat and cholesterol.

Ram meat (mutton) is a form of red meat, thus consumption should be in moderation.
